September 2003 Meeting

Hey, we asked for some Show and Tell items from our club members ... and we GOT them!  Wow folks.  He ran out of room to put everything this time.  Keep this up everybody. It was great seeing all the wonderful work and new ideas.  Hopefully, this wasn't a one-shot deal and everything that everybody has ever made was there at this meeting.  Bring in the rest. It was a real treat!

This was a pretty standard meeting this month (besides the terrific Show and Tell turnout!).  Almost every chair was used in the place and that's a good sign of interested woodturners.  We can always make room for more too.

We extended the AAW Certificate Woodturners Challenge until next month's meeting.  There was only one entry (which was absolutely beautiful by the way ... it was mine of course. ha!) and nobody wanted to see me win by default. Bring in your entries at the next meeting so we can vote and get our certificate up on the wall.

Program - Joe Traynham turning a Banksia Pod

Joe Banksia Pod 1.jpg (25715 bytes)
Joe Banksia Pod 2.jpg (52210 bytes) There was a good crowd on hand for this program.
Joe Banksia Pod 3.jpg (38947 bytes) Joe starts out by beating the life out of this Banksia Pod and tries to seat the spur center into on end of it.  I think this is where the Pod gets its poor attitude later in the program.

Watch for the to track the Pod's bad mood.

Joe Banksia Pod 4.jpg (32592 bytes) "Darth Joe".   Joe gets suited up to go to war with this thing.  And Joe knows what he's doing too.  The dust and fuzz of these Pods gets everywhere! Think and practice safety folks.
Joe Banksia Pod 5.jpg (44102 bytes)
Joe Banksia Pod 6.jpg (33223 bytes) Starting to form the outside shape now.
Joe Banksia Pod 7.jpg (32497 bytes)
Joe Banksia Pod 8.jpg (43015 bytes) Sharp ... Sharper  ..... Sharper-er .... Sharper-er-er .... and finally ..........Slice an artery!
Joe Banksia Pod 9.jpg (35184 bytes) Ernie gets a closer look.

Pod doesn't like strangers staring at it!

Joe Banksia Pod 10.jpg (32986 bytes) Outside formed. Tenon created for the scroll chuck to be used next. Sanding starts.

Sanding doesn't feel good ... try it on yourself sometime.

Joe Banksia Pod 11.jpg (46717 bytes) Joe switches to a scroll chuck so he can start hollowing out the Pod on one end.
Joe Banksia Pod 12.jpg (34281 bytes) First, Joe drills a hole with a Jacobs chuck and a Forstner bit.

Hey!  This HURTS man!

Joe Banksia Pod 13.jpg (29173 bytes) The starter hole is now drilled to the final depth.
Joe Banksia Pod 14.jpg (37405 bytes) Joe Parts off the little extra waste at the top of the Pod before he starts really hollowing it out.
Joe Banksia Pod 15.jpg (33089 bytes) He starts out with a straight Sorby hollowing tool here.
Joe Banksia Pod 16.jpg (34819 bytes) Now Joe starts to get serious about it.  He's taken off his headgear and smock but cunningly keeps the doctor's mask on.  That way the Pod can't easily identify him later.

Oh, yeah, here's a for that too.  Pod doesn't like to be fooled.

Joe Banksia Pod 17.jpg (32950 bytes) It's getting a little rough to hollow out this thing. Amazingly, Joe doesn't destroy the thing with all the force and work he has to put into into it. I think he had to use 3 different hollowing tools and numerous tips for them. This is one tough Pod and it usually doesn't take this much to hollow one out.
Joe Banksia Pod 18.jpg (43122 bytes) Joe finally brings out the BIG GUN.  Now he'll take care of this thing for sure

Pod doesn't like the tone of the writer and WILL take revenge at some point.

This tool is just a longer version of the straight hollowing tool that Joe used to start the hollowing process.  As he gets deeper into the vase (???), the longer tool helps him keep control.

Joe Banksia Pod 19.jpg (36567 bytes)
Joe Banksia Pod 20.jpg (38444 bytes) The hollowing is all done and Joe has turned the Pod around to finish off the foot.  Notice the cone he made out of scrapwood that's now in the scroll chuck.  This provides a centering and friction-fitting device to put the hollowed-out end of the Pod into.  The tailstock is brought up to support that end. Not much pressure from the tailstock or else it'll crack the Pod.
Joe Banksia Pod 21.jpg (35500 bytes)
Joe Banksia Pod 22.jpg (46787 bytes) Finishing off the bottom and that's it.

Just because Pod wants too.
