July 2004 Meeting

Our new lathe setup - The Jet 1642 Wood Lathe

A week before our July '04 meeting, we bought a Jet 1642 lathe with our AAW Educational Opportunity grant money.  We had looked for several months for a good, quality, used lathe but didn't find what we needed.  So, we decided to just buy a new one locally.  We got a great (fantastic, actually) deal and picked it up.  Below, you'll see some of our members putting it together.  The July meeting was the first time it was used.

DSCN4464.JPG (73243 bytes) It was all packed in one box that we tore the sides off of.  We had already taken the legs out from around the lathe bed that you see here.
DSCN4465.JPG (64466 bytes) The headstock, toolrest/banjo and tailstock were all on the bed as shipped.
DSCN4466.JPG (68931 bytes) Taking the headstock off. It's a WHOLE lot easier to put it all together if you'll just take it apart first.  Lots less weight when putting the bed onto the legs.
DSCN4467.JPG (47954 bytes) On your mark .... get set ...... no, we're not about to race.  We're cleaning the packing grease off and preparing the oak board we placed under the bed as a shelf.
DSCN4469.JPG (58762 bytes) Yeah yeah yeah ..... "you missed a spot" !
DSCN4473.JPG (62191 bytes) There it is.  It went together pretty fast and there were only 4 bolts on each leg / bed to tighten down.  The hardest part was holding each leg (they weigh a LOT) as you positioned the bed over them.

Time to make shavings.....

Program - Don Carlson with "Put a lid on it"

DSCN4493.JPG (68114 bytes) Just a few of the early arrivals to the meeting.  You'll notice that the place looks a bit different from our previous meetings.  That's because we moved our meetings into the warehouse of a club member.  It provides us with a lot more space.  You do need to bring your own chair and maybe a fan during the summer.

DSCN4500.JPG (62468 bytes) Hey, Don, a little more leg would be nice, eh?  Come on, guy!

(This is why we .... meaning your "friends" ... are always BEHIND the camera)

DSCN4501.JPG (89281 bytes) Please note:   Bob took the pictures.

All I did was post them online for millions of web surfers to see.

Actually, it's a great idea to cover yourself especially if your allergic or reactive to wood dust and shavings.  It also helps keep your clothes clean.  Don is wearing a surgical gown.

DSCN4502.JPG (47670 bytes) There he is working on our new lathe.  Great work, Don!  Everybody enjoyed the program.
